How to Control Uric Acid Through Diet

If you've had gout, you understand how painful a build up of uric acid in your blood stream can be. Uric acid is a byproduct of purines, which are found both naturally in the body and in food. Lowering the amount of purine you introduce to your body can help control uric acid. Unlike most diets, controlling uric acid isn't so much about what you should eat as what you shouldn't eat.



    Limit the amount of alcohol in your diet. Drinking heavily will interfere with your body's ability to get rid of uric acid as waste product.


    Watch out for foods that are high in purine. Not many people have a problem with eating too much meat from organs like brains, kidneys and sweet breads. Fish, on the other hand, most predominantly mackerel, herring and anchovies, can also contain a high level of purines. Because all meat contain purines, the Mayo Clinic recommends no more than 5 to 6 oz. of meat in the daily diet.


    Drink lots of water and other fluids. One of the best ways to avoid uric acid build-up is to take in plenty of fluids and flush the uric acid out through the bladder. Drink eight 8 oz. glasses of water daily.


    Don't attempt to do a rapid weight-loss or fasting diet. This type of dieting has been shown to increase uric acid levels in the body.


    Fill your diet with low uric acid foods. Dairy products, breads and cereals, nuts, oils, rice, pasta and fruit are all good low purine food that can help you control uric acid levels in your body.
